School Rumble 全系列的 DVD 原盘都有比较严重的色度平面偏移以及一些常见的 DVD 画面问题。我们针对性地修复了色度平面偏移，并且将画面拉升至 720p；对于少量较为复杂的交错情况（尤其是部分 OP、ED）进行了特殊处理；对于少量严重锯齿和花屏等问题也尽可能地进行了修复。 具体的处理包括： 1. 所有动画类视频均使用 Waifu2x-caffe 拉伸至 720p（三学期漫画广播剧特典除外，使用了 NNEDI3 让文字看起来略微自然一点）。片源中的噪点经过采样后抹除，然后在画面拉伸后重新打入，同时适当加黑了线条，使画风更接近片源，减弱基于神经网络的拉伸算法造成的油画感。 2. 由于制作后期剪辑问题，片源的少部分段落交错模式相当复杂，无法使用普通场匹配算法恢复。我们针对不同片段的特点进行了遮罩以及手动场匹配和反交错处理，避免引入额外的画面问题，并尽可能保持画面原本动态的流畅（如第一季 ED）。为了达到尽可能完美的 IVTC 效果，我们在确定基本处理之后将全部内容进行了试压制，全程观看了所有试压制成品，找出自动 IVTC 的错误，并逐一进行了手动修正。 3. 色度平面偏移问题在全部动画类片源中都相当明显。我们将色度平面移回了正确位置来消除这一问题。 4. 一学期补习和二学期片源中的个别镜头出现了非常严重的锯齿。我们下重手进行了抗锯齿操作，力图让锯齿不那么明显。 5. 二学期的 24、25 集片源出现了大量底部 1-2 行像素被切掉变成黑边的现象，这一现象在全系列其他地方也偶尔出现。对于画面底部为静态的镜头，我们用邻近帧的底部对黑边进行了填充；对于动态画面，则使用同一帧内黑边上方的邻近行向下进行了填充。 6. 二学期的 24 集片源出现了几帧花屏损坏。我们将这几帧在 Photoshop 里进行了手动修复，替换掉了损坏的帧。
The whole series of School Rumble has obvious chroma shift in the source, with some common issues found in DVDs as well. We fixed the chroma shift, and upscaled the picture to 720p. Occasional complex interlaced scenes (especially in some openings and endings) were dealt with custom-written IVTC functions. We also tried our best to fix some heavily aliased scenes and corrupted frames in the source. In particular: 1. All animated videos were upscaled to 720p using Waifu2x-caffe, with the only exception of the SP vomic in San Gakki where NNEDI3 were used to make the text appears slightly better. Grains were sampled, removed and reapplied after upscaling, and lines were adaptively darkened, in order to recover some of the visual features of the source and reduce the overall "oil painting effect" introduced by neural network-based scalers. 2. The source has some complex interlaced scenes due to bad editing, which cannot be recovered by normal field-matching algorithms. Customized masking and manual field-matching/deinterlacing were used in some of these cases, to avoid introducing additional artifacts and retain the smooth motion (e.g. the ending of S1) as much as possible. Given the imperfect nature of automatic IVTC, we had a dry run for all the encodings, watched them and tried to catch and fix the errors before the release. 3. Chroma shift is prominent across all animated videos. We tried to move the chroma planes back in place to fix this unpleasant artifact. 4. A few cuts in Ichi Gakki Hoshuu and Ni Gakki are heavily aliased. We tried our best to make them not as obvious. 5. There are lots of frames appear as clipped at the bottom by 1-2 pixels in Ni Gakki ep.24 and ep.25, and occasionally in other places. We tried to fill the gap with lines from adjacent frames (if they're supposed to be same) or lines above the gap from the same frame (if no adjacent frames can be used). 6. There are several corrupted frames in Ni Gakki ep.24. We fixed them in Photoshop and replaced the frames back into the video.
